Welcome to Coming Out 101

What stops most gay, lesbian and transgendered people from coming out?

In a word:

Fear.

Fear of losing something they have (love, job, respect) or not getting something they want (understanding, promotions, normalcy, safety).

In some cases the dread goes well beyond abandonment issues. Hate crimes are a national disgrace perpetrated on sissy boys, tomboy girls and beautiful grown men who die savage deaths simply because of who they are and who they love.

But for every hideous crime there are a thousand positive outcomes with family, coworkers and friends.

In the future days, weeks and months, Coming Out 101 will make an earnest attempt to become an online melting pot.

I invite all of you to share your coming out experiences as a part of this blog. This blog is ours. I hope you treat it accordingly by making yourself at home.

I've been thinking about this topic ... I think there is a degree of self-acceptance at play here that surpasses those sociological issues that may affect our personal well-being (or lack thereof). Perhaps self-loathing is the word. But I've met women's whose reluctance to come out is rooted somewhere in themselves. It's not about economy, it's not about sex or lust, it's not about their parents ... it's about themselves. If I was a psychologist I'd probably be better at putting this to words. But it goes along with the theory "me thinks thou dost protest too much". Like, if there's a person that absolutely despises homosexuality or lesbianism that much ... it's probably because of something in themselves that they are ... well, afraid of.
