Coming Out for the Greater Good
Coming out is a political act for sure, but it still involves one person at a time. And each individual situation will dictate what is best for him or her personally in terms of physical and emotional safety.
Coming out for the greater good doesn't mean much if it causes harm to the person doing it at this time. I don't mean in the forever sense and I don't mean harm as in I'm feeling a little uncomfortable. I didn't know this would take so much courage type of uneasiness.
I just don't necessarily think a teenager in Iowa should be kicked to the curb by their family just to make somebody in San Francisco feel better about a political agenda.
Do we deserve equal rights? Of course we do. Will that take protests, registering people to vote and legislation? Certainly. Believe me, I get it.
But what I understand even more is people on a one to one basis. As I've said many times, it is quite evident the more of us that come out, the better it is for each of us. But my protective ferocity will always come down on the side of an individual's right to choose what is best for him irregardless of what it may or may not mean for the betterment of the whole.
