Don't Pray for Me Minneapolis

Courtesy of Andrew Sullivan:

The impact of Benedict XVI's intensified demonization of gay people has come home to Minneapolis. An annual prayer service to coincide with gay pride has been forbidden:

"That descriptor (LGBT) was not possible on church property. We suggested they shift it, change the nature of it a little bit, and they did," archdiocese spokesman Dennis McGrath said. "The reason is quite simply because it was a LGBT pride prayer service, and that is really inimical to the teachings of the Catholic church."

The point of the Church, apparently, is to encourage gay people to feel shame and to deny even the validity of our identity. Note that this isn't about sex; it's about marginalizing a group already marginalized. Sometimes you wonder whether the Catholic hierarchy have ever read the Gospels.

Sometimes Andrew wonders whether the Catholic hierarchy has ever read the Gospels?

Sadly, many of them were too busy to read the Gospels or pray for gays because they were off reading books with such titles as:

Kids, Kids, Kids
Meet Me at the Altar
God Says It's Okay
How to Divest Church Funds
The Kama Sutra

Yes, God forbid that a parish should embrace with love and prayer its city's diverse citizenship on the one day a year it is even recognized.

Pass the wine, Father. We're going to need it.
