The Last Queer Holdout

I must have been the last gay in this pink triangle universe of ours that hadn't seen Brokeback Mountain. I don't know - gay cowboys set from the early 60's to 80's doesn't sound like it'll have a happy ending and I'm a happy ending kind of gal.  Think Field of Dreams and Pretty Woman . But Bravo had to blow it for me by running it last night multiple times.

I rightly predicted the obligatory self loathing, shame and secretive lifestyle that had to be the basis of any accurate portrayal of such a story. The gut wrenching fist pounding scene that follows their first departure couldn't make it any clearer as to where Ang Lee might be taking us - all the way to the "I don't know how to quit you" pinnacle.

I found their love as amazingly uplifting as it was destructive not only to Ennis and Jack, but to the women who grazed on the emotional leftovers because of it.

And yes, there was no happy ending for either. The final scene takes place directly in Ennis' closet. Amazing shot.

So come out or stay in, but know that most of us have found that a life lived unaligned with truth is bound to draw into it the obligatory self loathing and shame and who wouldn't want to quit that?
