Depression and Gays
A new study performed by British researchers suggests that gays and bisexuals are more likely to be depressed, addicted and suicidal versus their heterosexual counterparts.
The study revealed that gay, lesbian and bisexuals were 50% more likely to suffer from depression. Substance abuse figures were similar percentage wise and suicide attempts in gay adults were twice that of heterosexuals.
Unfortunately none of this is horribly shocking. When people are forced to deny who they are and who they are is not aligned with what they project to the world, addiction and depression cannot be far behind. And why would one deny their own truth? Fear. Rejection. Abandonment. Job loss. Abuse. Death.
If you are raised in a society that believes you are innately wrong, suicidal thoughts can sadly become the norm if nobody has told you otherwise.
It's difficult for any of us to be okay within our own skin. Advertisers count on us feeling inferior. We're too fat, too poor, too young, too old, too black, too queer. And when someone else's opinion matters more than our own, reaching for the vicodin and vodka seems like a reasonable alternative.
And what could be sadder than that?
